Are Southwest bags still free in 2026?

For most travelers, no: tickets bought on or after May 28, 2025 pay $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second on domestic flights under the April 9, 2026 schedule. Anyone who booked before the cutoff keeps two free bags for their 2026 travel, and so do A-List and A-List Preferred members plus Southwest co-brand cardholders — for most families, the card that keeps both bags free costs less than chasing the status itself.

What are the basic economy bag rules on Delta and United?

You do not pay less: the checked-bag fee is the same or higher — American charges a real $10-per-bag basic-economy surcharge from May 18, 2026, and our model keeps a $10-per-bag buffer on every carrier to stay conservative — you cannot choose a seat in advance (one is assigned at check-in) and you board last. On United you also lost the full-size carry-on on domestic basic: personal item only, with a $65 gate-check fee for a roller unless you hold status or a co-brand card. The practical rule: if you were going to pay for a seat and two bags anyway, the upcharge to regular economy drops below zero.

Do Gulf carriers include 2 free bags on international flights?

Yes — Emirates, Qatar Airways and Saudia all use the piece concept to and from the Americas: two checked pieces up to 23 kg each in economy, both directions, no fees. The US carriers include the first bag on their own Gulf long-haul metal (United flies Newark-Dubai nonstop) with the second at about $100. Where it bites is overweight ($100-200) and third-piece fees, not the first two bags.

Is it cheaper to pay overweight or check an extra bag?

Domestically, the extra bag usually wins: a 51-70 lb bag costs $75-100 on top of its bag fee at the Big-3, while a second checked bag is only $50-55 after the April 2026 hikes — splitting one 60 lb bag into two 50 lb bags saves roughly $50 per direction. On Gulf routes the logic flips: the allowance is weight-based, extra pieces are priced steeply and overweight runs closer to $150-200, so check the per-piece weight instead of adding bags.

Are airline status bag waivers worth it?

Rarely for families, yes for the solo frequent flyer — and the carriers differ sharply: Delta Silver Medallion already waives the first bag fee ($45 each way), while United Premier Silver gets nothing domestically — waivers start at Gold (two bags). The heaviest: American Executive Platinum (3 bags) and Southwest A-List (2 bags, kept after the free-bag policy ended). But a few round trips with the family burn that saving fast — a co-brand card is the quicker route.

Do credit cards give you free checked bags?

Yes, and usually better than status: most co-brand airline cards (Delta Amex, United Quest, Citi/American, the Southwest card) include a free first bag for the holder and companions on the same reservation — up to 8 people in some programs — worth over $360 for a family of four on a domestic round trip ($45 x 2 ways x 4), against an annual fee that is usually less than one ticket. On Gulf routes the bags are already included, so the card adds less there.

Are strollers and car seats free to check?

Always, on all nine carriers here: one stroller and one car seat per child, free whether gate-checked or dropped at the checked-bag desk, and they never count against your allowance. A compact umbrella stroller goes plane-side at the gate and comes back at the jet bridge, and an unused airplane seat can sometimes carry the car seat into the cabin. It is the one line item that needs no calculator.

Is gate-checking your bag free?

A persistent myth. If your roller bag fails the sizer at the gate you pay the same checked-bag fee — sometimes more.
